Status of My Mind #1

Hello!  I was thinking about how this is actually my first blog that isn't solely about travel or my somewhat boring life back home.  I'm on my own now and am giving myself that freedom to blog about really wH@t3vAz!

1.  My friend Richard came to visit me from New Haven a couple of weeks ago.  We actually met...at a taro patch (lo'i) cleanup back home.  I was visiting the Yale Art Gallery about 2 months ago and we met up and he showed me around.  He's quite a wonderful guy!  Now it was his turn to travel south and visit me on my campus.  My university actually has a campus that's really nice now that it's autumn everything about nature is starting to change and look incredibly beautiful.  Richard started to notice the birds more than anything on my campus.  There were swarms of them traveling together.  He made a good point about these birds: imagine how hard it is to coordinate that large of a group together to do anything and look at how these birds are able to get hundreds of them to fly in a single group towards a single direction without any confusion.  Interesting concept right?  We noticed these birds again during my English class last week and my professor pointed us out to this really amazing video which is just so breathtaking.  No matter what people say, nature is supreme.

2.  I can no longer walk around barefoot like how I used to back at home.  I mean I literally did everything barefoot, including while driving and learning in class (I always took off my shoes.)  Not only is the ground dirtier here (SOOOO many people just spit on the sidewalk it's disgusting) but the weather makes my feet even colder.  With that I've had quite an obsession with cute socks.  I didn't realize it until I started noticing my sock collection growing exponentially, growing faster than my sweater and coat collection since I've landed on the continental US.  I'm a big fan of thick, thick socks!  How do you wear your socks with pants?  Over your jeans or under?

Whoo!  Over the knee!!!:

They may be for boys between the ages of 18mons. and 8 years old but heck, they fit: http://www.hm.com/us/product/95129?article=95129-B

Stockings are not immune to the purchasing power of my credit card either: http://us.asos.com/Gipsy-Bondage-Tights/vsi8x/?iid=1401045&cid=7657&sh=0&pge=3&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Black&mporgp=L0dpcHN5L0dpcHN5LUJvbmRhZ2UtVGlnaHRzL1Byb2Qv
3.  I studied Egyptian art for a good three weeks or so and was unable to resist the beauty of the Egyptian eye.  The Eye of Horus has been on my mind for some years now and in fact the icons on my desktop were Egyptian hieroglyphics for quite sometime.  I don't wear any make up for a number of reasons but I've been thinking about starting to wear eye liner.  My love of my natural face, however, is holding me back.  You know that reaction you get when you see someone without make up on...yeah I don't want that to happen to me if I just decide to be lazy one day and not put on eye liner.  Anyway...here's a picture of my Egyptian eye pumpkin and a realllllly easy way to make an Egyptian/cat eye on yourself!

Concepts: Sight and Vision

In my senior year of high school, I was enrolled in an AP US Government class that really opened my mind to the culture of our society in more ways than just politically.  It showed me that everything was connected and that by understanding what's happening in the news and beyond, we can understand so much more that is hidden in jokes, cultural references, and parodies.

One of my favorites is of course the wonderfully amazing Steven Colbert and The Colbert Report.  Not gonna lie but I found myself watching an episode everyday at 11 o'clock at night...when I wasn't finished my homework.  Obsession.  Anyway, getting back to the point, Colbert has authors come and talk about their latest published work and I would write these books on a little sticky as a memo to buy the next time I went to a bookstore.  On a particular episode, they had on air David Brooks, a columnist for the New York Times come and talk about his most recent book, The Social Animal.  Sounded like a pretty good book so I scribbled it down.

Fast forward to my first class ever in college and sure enough my Art History professor mentions how this book was THE book of the summer.  He gave it the honor of the "all conversation book" to impress people with at a wedding with strangers or in an elevator ride with a boss or business official just to let them know that "hey, I have some intellect and keep up with what's going on."  I bought an eBook copy of this book for my iPhone later that day.

I don't want to let loose any spoilers because I really recommend this for anyone but I got to say is just an encyclopedia of information that you should know, covering topics from biology, evolution, psychology, child development and I'm only about 400 pages into the book here.  Imagine a book that although may not have the direct answers to the universe but knowledge on how you can improve your current situation and allow you to fully enjoy your life in more ways than only through wealth.  Sounds amazing right??

There was a portion of the book where Brooks mentions how "no simple machine is able to perform the imaginative construct" of being able to imagine ourselves from a human to something like a tiger.  Think about it- when we were kids we were able to think ourselves as animals, superheroes, and other objects like plates (?)  I know that I once thought of myself as being a deer and dabbled in trying some leaves...  The brain is able to perform this task incredibly easily but we don't appreciate it.  There is no device out there (Siri is amazing...and a little creepy) that has something as complex as an imagination!!!

The simple of twist of looking at at a concept like imagination in a new light made me start thinking about something else that we take for granted- sight.  Isn't it interesting how we can look at something- anything- and it stays with us, in an organic structure smaller than an iPad.  Questions- what makes us able to remember things using sight?  How are we able to see something and then feel something?  Do we unconsciously put ourselves in that person's shoes and if so why do we do that?  Is it just a part of human nature that we are born with compassion?  Do we dig up past memories given to us by sight that connects us to what our eyes are focusing on now?

Stating a Purpose

Why hello there world!

I'm a girl on the search for the answers to the three existential questions that most humans ponder.
1.  Who am I?
2.  Where am I going?
3.  Why am I here?

I've encountered a lot of people over the past 18 years of life, many that I don't see eye-to-eye with and others who I consider to be my utmost companions in understanding the world we live in.  As much as I would like to change people's ideas and opinions to match my own, I can't.  Everyone should have their own freewill to think for themselves!  And thus comes about the purpose of this blog.

Because I can't enter another person's mind and force them to think about philosophical questions and academia, I will merely try to create opportunities for discussions that may cultivate knowledge, like an idea springboard.  What I plan on writing about will be topics that you can sit in a comfy chair and think about or chat with friends in a cafe, both situations with a cup of tea of course!!  I'm not only going to be blogging about philosophy, so don't feel too bored already!  I am a still a teenage girl of course so I'll be mentioning but pop culture, trivia, travel (I'm going to school quite near NYC), fashion, history, art, the works!  The 21st century generation is so connected to technology that I think a short, simple blog will do more than enough to reach out to folk my age, right?  We'll see how this goes and I guarantee that I'll be changing the purpose of site as time goes by.

All in all, aja aja here we go~
